Thanks Michael. I hope you enjoyed reading.
What a wide array of artists you mention, nice. Sleater-Kinney are a personal favourite of mine, too (bonus kudos for Wild Flag).
That’s interesting. ‘Going Down To Liverpool’ is a powerful pull and an extremely catchy song. It’s always nice to hear when it was the All Over The Place era that caught the ear of listeners and fans. It’s definitely an era that doesn’t get enough love as it’s always a fun spin on the turntable. Their cover of ‘Hazy Shade Of Winter’ is definitely one to be remembered.
Good to hear you rediscovered the band. Their commercial success years aren’t to everyone’s taste although I do recommend checking out the live material (mostly bootlegs; a few soundboard recordings) even from that era as there’s a definite rockiness and liveliness that the studio recordings failed to capture (or tried to numb). There are live hidden gems like their segue into covers such as Creedence Clearwater Revival numbers and some other live covers which have yet to surface. Their setlists from ‘86 onwards did become a little stale although occasionally they were known to sneak in a 60s cover just to keep the garage alive!
