Sorry to hear that you missed out on seeing the band during their original tenure, that’s unfortunate.

The really interesting thing about The Bangles is that they were such a layered band, member to member. The rhythm section of the band certainly don’t get enough love and Debbi is such an underrated drummer.

This piece was a culmination of a lot of things but mostly what you mention. It is really unfair that they get thrown into that grouping just because they existed in the same era. It’s kind of insane how music then (and even now to some extent) still treat “female” as a genre. The Bangles were a guitar playing band. They weren’t solely a vocal group and for some reason that seems to go over a lot of critic’s heads.

It is really sad to see them succumb to the package shows when they could do so much better. Seeing them share the bill with one-hit wonder acts is disappointing. They were very outspoken about joining the so-called “Dick Clark Golden Oldies” when they reformed but I guess they just gave in over time.
